We plan to build the largest food forest in the Eastern United States, replacing a section of the existing wooded areas with a managed food forest consisting of native and hardy species of fruiting and nut bearing trees & plants. The forest will be a healthy natural ecosystem with at least 80%-90% of the plants being edible. It will be publicly accessible with many miles of walking trails for public use. This offers many educational opportunities, including teaching about food origins, healthy forest management, wild plant harvesting and other topics. The forest will serve as a natural habitat and food source for many wild animals and birds. The inspiration for this project is Beacon Food Forest in Seattle (http://www.beaconfoodforest.org/).
